ChatGPT Click-to-Chat Ads: the Click Opens an Agent, Not a Website
OpenAI is testing a ChatGPT ad format whose click opens a conversation instead of a website. The website is deferred, not deleted.
OpenAI's product post on 16 September 2026 states it plainly: “We’re testing Sponsored Agents, which let people start a conversation with a business-sponsored agent after clicking an ad in ChatGPT.” The funnel is moving from ad to website onto ad to agent.
Four dates carry the story, and they are not interchangeable. Search Engine Roundtable and AdTechRadar reported an Agent campaign type in the advertiser console on 31 July 2026. Juozas Kaziukėnas posted a first-person click-through on 10 September 2026. Digiday reported the consumer-facing format on 14 September 2026, writing that it had “viewed via video and verified” it. OpenAI confirmed a test on 16 September 2026. Each claim below carries its source and date.
The consequence is not the novelty. The conversion surface moves inside an interface the brand does not own.
Click to chat vs click to site: what actually changes
Digiday's 14 September 2026 report gives the mechanics: the format “allows advertisers to attach a branded business agent to an ad”, and the click becomes “a conversation with an AI agent rather than sending users to their websites”. OpenAI's 16 September 2026 post adds the containment rules: the conversation is clearly labelled, it is “distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers”, and it is separate from the thread the user started.
| Dimension | Click-to-site ad (existing) | Click-to-chat ad (Sponsored Agents) |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion surface | Your landing page, form or checkout | A labelled conversation with the brand's agent inside ChatGPT (OpenAI, 16 September 2026) |
| Measurement | Impressions and clicks, the events the existing stack is built on (PPC Land, 16 September 2026) | Not described: “A conversation produces neither in a form that fits a reporting column” (PPC Land, 16 September 2026) |
| Latency | The click is the handoff; the visitor arrives immediately | The answer arrives in the conversation; the website comes later, “when they’re ready to take the next step” (OpenAI, 16 September 2026) |
| Cost model | Self-serve bidding since Ads Manager opened on 5 May 2026 (PPC Land timeline, 16 September 2026) | Unstated: OpenAI has not said how the unit is priced (PPC Land, 16 September 2026) |
| Control | You own the destination page end to end | Label and separation are OpenAI's mechanism (16 September 2026); Wayfair cites “guardrails around product accuracy, transparency and service handoffs” (Digiday, 14 September 2026) |
The format is confirmed, and the reporting for it is not described by anyone. The only published in-chat conversion figure concerns a different product, Instant Checkout, which OpenAI shut down in March 2026 — it is not a Sponsored Agents result (PPC Land, 16 September 2026).
The new conversion surface sits inside the brand's agent
If the conversation is where the decision happens, the agent's behaviour is the landing page. Wayfair, the first brand publicly confirmed in the pilot, gave Digiday its guardrail list on 14 September 2026: “We’re testing at limited scale with guardrails around product accuracy, transparency and service handoffs.” Those three words are the checklist.
- Answer accuracy. The agent's product claims must be claims the brand stands behind, sourced from a feed rather than a prompt.
- Escalation and handoff. Where does the conversation go when the agent cannot close it — a human, a booking flow, or a link out? “Service handoffs” is the guardrail most brands have not designed.
- Pricing transparency. What the agent may say about price, and what it must decline, is a policy decision.
- Disclosure and containment. OpenAI's baseline is a clearly labelled conversation, distinct from ChatGPT's independent answers and separate from the user's original thread (16 September 2026).
- Tone and guardrails. The agent is a brand surface, so its refusals deserve the same review as its answers.
- The unanswerable question. An agent that guesses is worse than one that hands off, which makes escalation the highest-value thing to design.
Two items on that list cannot be closed from the public record. OpenAI has not said “what, if anything, the advertiser receives from the exchange, which model runs the agent, who writes its instructions, or how the unit is priced” (PPC Land, 16 September 2026).
What happens to website traffic when the click opens a chat
This is the fear question, and the best-sourced answer is in OpenAI's own text. Its 16 September 2026 post has the user “follow a link to the business’s website when they’re ready to take the next step”. The format moves the website later in the journey; it does not remove it. Copy claiming the site is replaced is over-claiming.
The tension underneath is real. Digiday put the retailer question on 14 September 2026: “over whether there’s a benefit to keeping a potential customer inside ChatGPT rather than sending them to their own site?” The same report notes that “Retailers want to get user data through their owned sites” while accepting the journey can happen anywhere.
The practitioner who found the format live takes the other side: “If I was Wayfair, though, I'd rather people just come to my website.” It is a judgment, dated 10 September 2026.
No source read for this page publishes a figure for the effect of click-to-chat on advertiser website traffic, so none is stated. What still matters is unchanged: the page the agent links to, the structured description of what the brand sells, and the entity clarity behind those answers.
Two buying routes, six days apart
Amazon's route opened on 10 September 2026, when Amazon Ads and OpenAI announced that advertisers using Amazon Ads — the platform that includes the Amazon DSP — could buy ads inside ChatGPT. Amazon's newsroom post sets the scope: “Select advertisers in the U.S. are currently testing ChatGPT Ads as part of a pilot.” CNBC adds that Amazon sets up and manages campaigns while OpenAI's ads system controls delivery, and that units are text or images beneath responses. Digiday names Delta Vacations first.
OpenAI's self-serve route runs alongside it. The ads.openai.com page as archived on 29 August 2026 leads into “Ads Manager, where you can create your account, create campaigns”, and does not mention Sponsored Agents, which is why this page makes no claim that ordinary self-serve buyers can reach the format today. The sequence is the story: the pipe opened on 10 September 2026 and the unit at the end of it was named on 16 September 2026.
Confirmed, observed, reported, paywalled: how to read this week
Most coverage collapses four evidence types into one. Keeping them apart is the difference between a briefing and a rumour.
- Confirmed (primary source). OpenAI, 16 September 2026: Sponsored Agents “are now being tested with select advertisers in the United States”, in a labelled conversation separate from ChatGPT's answers. Amazon Ads, 10 September 2026: a pilot for select United States advertisers buying ChatGPT inventory through Amazon Ads.
- Observed (first person, dated). A practitioner's own post on 10 September 2026 describes clicking a live Wayfair ad and landing in “a Wayfair business chat with a prefilled prompt, which is a custom GPT behind the scenes”. It is a sighting, not a study.
- Reported (journalism, dated). Digiday, 14 September 2026, states the format was “viewed via video and verified”, and adds the advertiser read: “still promising, still unproven”, with spend held in experimental budgets.
- Paywalled claim (headline only). Stratechery's 15 September 2026 daily update was led by the claim that ChatGPT ads are working and solve Amazon's biggest problem with chatbots. The reasoning is subscriber-only, so the claim is citable and the argument is not.
One conflict belongs in any client conversation: OpenAI's public post is firmer than its same-day advertiser email, which PPC Land described as “describing a conversation that users may be able to start rather than one they can”.
The counterweight is datable: Nate Elliott of eMarketer said on 10 September 2026 that the ad operation is “still trying to build out even many of the basics of a functional ad sales operation”. Scale context, reported rather than audited: a “$1 billion annualized revenue run rate” (CNBC, 10 September 2026).
A prep checklist for this quarter
Seven steps a brand can action before the format is buyable at scale, all of them useful even if click-to-chat stays a test.
- Write the answer set. List the twenty questions the agent should answer, then the twenty it must not.
- Design the handoff. Decide what happens at the end: a human, a booking flow, or a link to a specific page.
- Put the four unstated questions on paper. Pricing, what the advertiser receives, which model runs the agent and who writes its instructions are all unstated as of 16 September 2026 (PPC Land).
- Keep the site as the next step. OpenAI's own description still sends the user to the website when they are ready (16 September 2026).
- Make that page quotable. One entity, consistent product names, structured descriptions an assistant can read without guessing.
- Do not budget against reporting you cannot open. The existing stack is built on impressions and clicks; what a conversation returns is unstated.
- Fund it as a test. The most recent advertiser evidence is “still promising, still unproven” (Digiday, 14 September 2026).
For the buying mechanics: how ChatGPT ads are bought today, the self-serve route into Ads Manager, the European rollout so far, and what staff are already asking ChatGPT; the priced band for the work sits in the companion calculator, ChatGPT ads agency pricing.
What is OpenAI's click-to-chat ChatGPT ad format?
It is a ChatGPT ad whose click opens a labelled conversation with a business-sponsored agent instead of a website. OpenAI calls the format Sponsored Agents and said on 16 September 2026 that it is testing them with select advertisers in the United States. The conversation is distinct from ChatGPT's own answers, and the user can still follow a link to the business's website when ready.
Do ChatGPT ads work in 2026?
Two dated readings disagree. Stratechery led its 15 September 2026 daily update with the claim that ChatGPT ads are working, though the reasoning sits behind a paywall. Digiday's advertiser check-ins four days earlier concluded they are still promising but still unproven, with return on investment the reason budgets stay experimental. No independent performance data for Sponsored Agents has been published.
ChatGPT ads vs Google Ads in 2026: what actually changes when the click opens a chat?
The difference is where the click lands. A click-to-site ad produces a page view, while the click-to-chat format produces a conversation, and that is where the reporting gap bites. PPC Land noted on 16 September 2026 that a conversation produces neither an impression nor a click in a form that fits a reporting column.
Is the click-to-chat format live for all advertisers, or still a test?
It is a test. OpenAI's wording on 16 September 2026 is that Sponsored Agents are being tested with select advertisers in the United States, and its same-day advertiser email says users may be able to start the conversation. An advertiser-side agent campaign type was reported in place for select accounts on 31 July 2026; the ads.openai.com page archived on 29 August 2026 does not mention the format.
How is the Amazon DSP route different from buying through OpenAI's own Ads Manager?
Amazon's route opened first, on 10 September 2026, letting advertisers using Amazon Ads, which includes the Amazon DSP, buy ChatGPT inventory in a pilot limited to select United States advertisers. CNBC reported that Amazon sets up and manages those campaigns while OpenAI's ads system controls delivery, and that the units are text or images beneath responses.

Accuracy note: this page describes a format OpenAI is testing, not a released product. OpenAI's own word on 16 September 2026 is testing with select advertisers in the United States, and its same-day advertiser email is more tentative than its public post. The advertiser-side campaign type was reported in place for select accounts on 31 July 2026; no source read here shows ordinary self-serve buyers able to reach the format. No price, no conversion-rate comparison and no traffic-impact figure for this format is published, and none is stated here. The Instant Checkout reference in this page is labelled as a different product, shut down in March 2026. Stratechery's claim is quoted from a public standfirst; its reasoning is behind a paywall and is not paraphrased. Sources were fetched and checked on 18 September 2026.
