What's happening. On August 13, 2026, Microsoft announced it is merging its consumer Copilot app and its business-oriented Microsoft 365 Copilot app into a single updated Copilot experience — and retiring a set of consumer Copilot features by August 18, 2026.
Features going away by Aug 18
- Group Chat — retired. Group chats migrate to individual 1:1 chats with Copilot; content shared by other participants (including images) will not be accessible afterward. Download media before the update.
- AI-generated Podcasts — no longer available after August 18; download individual podcasts first.
- Deep Research (consumer) — retired in the consumer Copilot app. Saved research remains, but no new reports. Paid replacement: Researcher, for Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers.
- Copilot Labs experiments — retired. Content created in Labs (3D assets, audio clips) does not carry forward; save before updating.

Why the app consolidation matters
The apps themselves are merging: users of both apps with a personal account get chats and content merged into one; files move to OneDrive; personal and work/school accounts stay separate. Copilot chat becomes available to personal Microsoft 365 Copilot app users at no extra cost. Mobile and web change mid-August; Windows and Mac follow mid-September.
Why this is a concrete example of AI product churn
The announcement-to-effective window is five days. Agencies that recommended Group Chat, Podcasts, Deep Research, or Labs now have a feature that disappears before the invoice is due. What to do before Aug 18
- Re-audit your recommended AI tool stack. Verify feature availability at the moment of every recommendation — and on a cadence, not just at contract time. Flag experimental, free, or paywalled features: those are the ones at risk.
- Identify alternatives now. Deep Research users can move to Researcher (Microsoft 365 Premium) or another research tool. Test replacements before the deadline, not after clients hit a broken workflow.
- Communicate changes to clients before the retirement date. If a client's workflow touches Group Chat, Podcasts, Deep Research, or Labs, tell them now: export reports, download podcasts, save Labs content, and download group-chat media before Aug 18. A five-day window means the email cannot wait.
